The Central Goldfields region in Victoria, Australia is a land of history. It was the site of the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s that transformed the area from a pastoral landscape into a booming mining town. Today, the region is known for its historic towns, stunning landscapes and rich past.

Early History

The Central Goldfields region has been inhabited by the Jaara people for thousands of years before European arrival. The Jaara people lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle, hunting and gathering from the land.

The first European explorer to visit the region was Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836. He named the area "New South Wales Felix" which means "fortunate New South Wales" in Latin. The name did not stick and it was eventually changed to the Central Goldfields.

Gold Rush

The Victorian gold rush began in 1851 when gold was discovered in Ballarat. By 1852, the gold rush had spread to the Central Goldfields region. Towns such as Maryborough, Dunolly and Avoca saw a rapid increase in population as miners flocked to the area in search of gold.

The gold rush period was a time of great prosperity for the region. The population of Maryborough grew from just 200 in 1851 to over 30,000 in 1861. The gold rush also saw the region's infrastructure grow with new schools, hospitals and public buildings being constructed.

Post-Gold Rush Era

By the end of the gold rush in the late 1800s, the population of the Central Goldfields region had begun to decline. Many of the miners left the area to work in other parts of Australia or overseas. However, some stayed and the region continued to prosper through agriculture, manufacturing and rail transport.

During World War II, the region played an important role in the manufacturing of munitions and military equipment. The Maryborough Railway Workshops produced railway rolling stock and mechanical parts for military aircraft and ships.
